Descartes is called the "town of the three René's" since there were three famous citizens named René. All three of them have a monument in the town:
Jean-Baptist Chevrier chose the pseudonym René de Buxeuil in order "to be the third René after Descartes and Boylesve". His bust - unveiled 22 October 1967 - faces the town of Buxeuil on the opposite side of the river Creuse.
- René Descartes (1596-1650).
- René Boylesve (1867-1926).
- René de Buxeuil (1881-1959).
- Aldo Bartelletty-Daillion (Seravezzo, Italy, 1898 - 1976),
