Description

Stone statue of St. Mary standing on a sphere.
This statue was erected by the people of Plozévet to commemorate the 1865 mission. It also symbolises the revival of worship of the Virgin Mary in the town. This era was marked by major repair work to religious buildings and the acquisition of new statues for the parish church. The religious pardon which takes place around the statue on the first Sunday in May began in 1869 and was considered one of the most important religious festivals in the parish.

Depictions of Saint Mary

Saint Mary, as the mother of Jesus Christ, has a central role in the life of the Roman Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic veneration of her as the Blessed Virgin Mary has grown over time both in importance and manifestation, not only in prayer but in art, poetry and music. She is usually depicted as a beautiful young woman, with a (blue) mantle. In the majority of the depictions she is having the Infant Jesus in her arms or on her lap.
