The monument is erected to remember the eight victims of the Tenerife Flood of 31 March 2002.

Las aguas nos arrebataron vidas, arrasaron
hogares, nos dejaron lágrimas y luto;
pero quedó intacto el afán de superación
de los habitantes de Santa Cruz
De la desesperació se alimentó la esperanza
y la solidaridad de un pueblo, que supo
sobreponerse a la desgracia y trabajar
por la reconstrucción

The waters took our lives, swept away
our homes, left us with tears and mourning;
but the desire of the inhabitants of
Santa Cruz to improve remains intact
Out of despair came hope
and the solidarity of a people, who knew
to overcome misfortune and work
for the reconstruction
