Según la tradición popular, la gentilicio "chicharrero", con el que se denomina a los habitantes de Santa Cruz de Santiago de Tenerife, se remonta al siglos XVI y tiene su raíz en los orígines de la ciudad, cuando ésta tan sólo un poblado costero cuya actividad productive má importante entonces era la pesca. El chicharro, un popular pez de las aguas tinerfeóas, constituía la captura más abundante de los pescadores santacruceros. De ahí que, tanto desde municipios vecinos de Tenerife, como de otras islas, se identificase a los habitantes de Santa Cruz vomo chicharreros.
Con esta escultura, fiel réplica de aquellas primeras barquitas de pesca (así como los aparejos diverfsos y bandejas de pescado que se reproducen en su interior), se rinde homenaje a los pescadores que con su esfuerzo diario forjaron el carácter de esta bella ciudad canaria.

Nach Überlieferung stammt der volkstümliche Name für Einwohner von Santa Cruz de Santiago de Tenerife, "Los chicharreros", aus dem 16. Jahrhundert; diese Bezeichnmung wird zurückgeführt aif die Ursprünge dieser Stadt, zu einer Zeit als diese nich mehr als ein kleiner Küstenort war und der Fischfang ihre wichtigste wirtschaftliche Aktivität.
"El chicharrero" war nich nur ein beliebter Fisch in den Gewässern Teneriffas sondern auch der, der von den Fischernm von Santa Cruz am häufigsten gefangen wurde. So kam es, dass Menschen sowohl von Nachbarorten als auch vin anderen Inseln die Bewohner von Santa Cruz als "chicharreros" bezeichneten.
Diese Skulptur is eine getreue Nachbildung jener ersten Fischerboote (die im Inneren genauso ausahen, mit verschiedenen Ausrüstungen und Fischkásten u.a.); mit ihr werden die Fischer von damals gewürdigt, die mit ihrer täglichen Kraftaufwand den Charakter dieser kanarischen Stadt mitgeprägt haben.

According to popular tradition, the denomination of the inhabitants of Santa Cruz de Santiago de Tenerife, "Los chicharreros", dates back to the sixteenth century and has its origins in the very city, when it was just a small coastal town whose most important economic activity was fishing.
"El Chicharrero" was a popular fish in the waters of Tenerife, in fact it was the most abundant capture of teh fisherman of Santa Cruz. Therefore the people of Santa Cruz became known als "los chicharreros", to the community itself as well as to the rest of the archipelago. With this sculpture, true replica of the first small fishing boats (as well as the diverse objects and fish trays reproduced inside the boat), we oay homage to the fishermen who with their daily effort shaped this beautiful Canary city.
