Description

On a hilltop in the city of Huelva is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de la Cinta. Returning from his first voyage to America and sailing from the Azores homeward in the night of 2 March 1493 the Niña hit straight into the centre of a major storm. For the third time this voyage the lot was cast as to who should make a pilgrimage if all were spared — this time Santa Maria de la Cinta — and again the lot fell on Columbus. To acknowledge his debts, he visited the sanctuary on 27 March 1493. This fact is commemorated on several places in and outside the buildings.

Inscription(s)

Outside, visible from the street is an azulejo with Columbus' portrait and a depiction of his fleet, and the text:
En este Santuari estuvo orando en fé de una promesa Cristobal Colon, a su vuelta del nuevo mundo, en marzo de MCDXCIII.

(1) Next to the altar in the church is this azulejo by Zuloaga of 1920 with a depiction of a ship in a tempest and Columbus praying to Maria. In the text below, only partly visible, is referred to a storm in the night of 2 March 1493.
This azulejo is described in Sugrañes's book, pp. 37-38.
