Tartu - Oskar Luts

Oskar Luts (1887-1953) is the favourite author of many generations
of readers, a prolific writer whose work comprises short stories, novels,
memoirs, articles, feuilletons and plays. The first and most well-known
of his books is "Kevade" ("Spring"), the novel that played a major
role in shaping the national awareness and characters of Estonians.
The characteristic features of his work include the realistic depiction of
everyday life, a slowly flowing mode of narration, native idiom, vivid
characters, and warm humour. The literary career of Oskar Luts spanned
almost 45 years. Besides writing, he also worked as a chemist for
17 years in Tartu, Narva, Tallinn, and Russia.
Tartu was his hometown since 1918. Beginning with 1936, Oskar Luts
lived in his own house in Riia Street, which is now his house museum.
The memorial was unveiled in 1987 to commemorate the writer's
centenary. The authors of the monument are sculptor Aulin Rimm and
architect Allan Murdmaa.
