Yuri Lotman

[Text in Estonian]

Yuri Lotman (1922-1993), professor of Tartu University for many years, was
one of the most outstanding scholars in the 20th-century Tartu. Yuri Lotman
studied Russien literature and culture, and the general laws governing culture.
He was de founder of cultural semiotics, as well as the Tartu-Moscow School
of Semiotics. His profound knowledge of cultural history and his original
theoretical thought combined to create a most unique contribution to the
development of humanities in the world.
The idea of the sculpture, consisging of five 15-metre steel tubes, was inspired
by the self-portrait of Yuri Lotman. The sculpture by Mati Karmin and Andres
Lunge was unveiled in 2007.

Annotation

Juri Lotman liked to draw, and his archive contains a number of self-portraits. Here is one of his sketches, the caption reads as follows: "Defense of student papers. 21 May 1974. A late, late evening".
