Over the balustrade of the southern transept of St. Mary's Church four statues are looking downwards: the central figures are emperor Charles IV and his wife Elisabeth of Pomerania, each accompanied by a servant. It depicts the annual homage to the emperor by the city council of Mühlhausen. The depiction of the profane homage ceremony at a church building is an absolute peculiarity. Secular figures are otherwise rarely to be found at church buildings.
