Description

Statue of Mendelssohn with toga, holding a music roll in his left hand and a baton in his right. He stands in front of a music stand, a reference to the fact that he was the first conductor to act in the modern sense. On the rRight side of plinth sits Euterpe, the Muse of Music, on the steps, leaning on a lyre. On each side are two putti making music, the left singing, the right playing the flute and violin. On the left side of the plinth, an organ in a medallion symbolises sacred music; on the right side, masks, a vase with a dance scene, flutes and a sword represent secular music.

The statue was melted during World War II, and in 1947 a much more simple monument was erected as a replacement.
In 2008 the statue was reconstructed by the sculptor Christian Schulze on the basis of photogrammetrically measured old photos.
