The monument was designed by the painter Eduard Bendemann in Dresden, a friendn of Mendelssohn. Advisors were the painter Julius Hübner and the sculptor Ernst Rietschel. After Bendemann's retirement due to illness, the artistic and practical realisation was then the sole responsibility of Julius Hübner. The execution was entrusted to the stonemason Friedrich Moritz Hiller in Dresden-Antonstadt. The sculptor Hermann Knaur, a pupil of Ernst Rietschel, created the figurative representations. For the bust of the composer, Knaur apparently followed the portrait of Bach painted by Elias Gottlob Haußmann in 1746 (then owned by the Thomasschule in Leipzig).
