Rathausbrunnen oder RattenfängerbrunnenTown Hall Fountain or Pied Piper Fountain |
Georg Wrba
1908 |
Fountain consisting of an octagonal stone water basin with in its center a round column which on its top the Pied Piper of Hameling playing his flute with two boys playing at his feet. Because of this motif, the fountain is sometimes called the Pied Piper Fountain.
Around the column is a "Märchenkranz" (Fairytale wreath) consisting of sixteen groups of water-spouting figures: eight children's couples from German fairytales, and between are arranged cartouches of rams' heads and various animals.
On the base of the column there is a dedication plaque and three portrait medallions: for the two Leipzig mayors Otto Georgi, who laid the foundation stone for the New Town Hall, and Bruno Tröndlin, who opened the New Town Hall, as well as for the architect Hugo Licht, the designer of the New Town Hall.
