The Richard Wagner Memorial consists of two different parts, one of 1924 and one of 2013.
The 2.90 m high marble pedestal with a square ground plan was created according to a design by M. Klinger. In three sides are reliefs with characters from Wagner's operas, the fourth side was intended for an inscription. The pedestal was erected in 1924, four years after Klinger's death. It was intended to support a marble statue of Wagner of about 5.3 m high, also designed by Klinger. The planned execution was delayed and at the beginning of the 1930s abandoned for over 80 years.
On 22 May 2013, the 200th birthday of Wagner, that the monument was finally completed. Instead of the originally planned huge marble statue, an equally large black shadow and "only" a life-size statue of the young Wagner were placed on the plinth, both designed by Stephan Balkenhol.
