The first mention of a Roland statue in front of the Magdeburg town hall dates from 1419. Regularly a new (wooden) statue was made. In 1631 the statue was destroyed and not replaced before 1933, when a new wooden statue by Rudolf Bosselt was made. This statue was used as firewood in the winter 1945/46. The present sandstone Roland was placed on 23 December 2005.
