Description

Bronze statue of Saint Martin on horseback sharing his cloak with a beggar, on the central column of a fountain.
The first Market Fountain, placed in 1459, was already provided with a statue of St. Martin, the patron saint of Cochem. This fountain no longer exists, because since the statue was weathered, the city fathers had demolished the old fountain and replaced it in 1863 with a new cast-iron fountain decorated with two lanterns, and on top a terracotta figure of St. Martin. The fountain was replaced in 1906, but the terracotta figure stayed until 1935, when it was replaced with the present bronze statue.
