Emperor Otto II rendered rendered at the Diet of Verona on 14 June 983 the sovereign rights over the town of Bingen and the Binger country to his chancellor, Archbishop Willigis of Mainz. This donation is known as the Imperial Act in Verona. After the second World War this became the historical starting point for partnership between the province of Verona and the present Mainz-Bingen district in which the cities of Verona and Bingen are included.
