Description

Bronze sculpture of a lion, with two little mice playing between his front paws. Being the lion of a wine town, the tip of his tail is shaped like a grape. A vineyard snail has confused the tail with a vine and settled on it for a rest.

Annotation

The lion is a so-called 'Apotropaion', a symbol against bad luck, near the main entrance of the town hall. The lion is also in the coat of arms of Neustadt an der Weinstraße.
The animals symbolize the Democracy in the City Council: The lion in front of City Hall is the strength, the owl ghe wisdom and the hedgehog the valor (the latter in the Council Chamber).
