Statues - Hither & Thither

Im April 1999 wurde von der „Stiftung für Kunst, Kultur und Denkmal pflegeʺ der Sparkasse Hattingen ein internationaler Wettbewerb zur künstlerischen Gestaltung des historischen Steinhagentores ausgelobt. Ziel war es, die fünf mittelalterlichen Stadttore Hattingens durch moderne Kunst neu im Stadtraum zu definieren.

Mit Unterstützung der Hattinger Wohnstätten eG war es möglich, die prämierte Arbeit des Künstlers Voré aus Ettlingen im Jahre 2003 zu realisieren. Das Wohnungsunternehmen finanzierte dieses Kunstwerk aus Anlass des 100. Firmenjubiläums im Jahr 1999 als Geschenk an die Bürgerinnen und Bürger der Stadt Hattingen.

Die Skulptur bezieht sich streng auf die gegebene thematische und örtliche Situation in der Öffnung der historischen Stadtmauer. Diese ist in ihrer Materialität, Farbigkeit und Dimension die Basis, an und auf der eine prägnante, zeichenhafte und gestalterisch differenzierte Gestaltung der Idee „Stadt-Torʺ entwickelt wird.

Das städtische Gefüge als Verbindung aus menschlichem Gemeinwesen und gebauten Raum wird dargestellt in einer steinernen Gruppe, bei der figürlich gewachsene und konstruktive architektonische Elementen so ineinander verbaut sind, dass eine untrennbare Einheit entsteht.

Die Trennung von Innen und Außen wird umgesetzt in die deutlichen optischen Barriere, die durch die stahlerne Konstruktion des „Gattersʺ weithin sichtbar symbolisiert wird. Mit einer senkrecht stehenden Sandsteinplatte innerhalb der „Figurengruppeʺ wird auch dort ein Zeichen gesetzt für das Tor, das durch die Mitglieder des Gemeinwesens geöffnet oder geschlossen wird. Die Stellung der Tür-Platte in einer labilen Position, abgesetzt von der Mauer, deutet auf deren Beweglichkeit und Schließfunktion hin.

Die Ambivalenz der Situation zwischen dem behütenden Charakter der Mauer für Innen und einer latent agressiven Abwehr gegen Außen wird signalisiert durch die behäbig breiten Barriere-Elemente, die auf der Mauer lagern. Der Balken von der Innenstadtseite her ist angehoben und damit geöffnet. Von außen bleiben die Stadtmauerteile streng verbunden und mit einer Reihe von hochgezogenen Gatterpfählen besetzt als weithin sichtbares Zeichen für wehrhaften Schutz.

Das Gesamtwerk lebt aus der Spannung zwischen den Materialien Stahl und Stein und gleichzeitig aus derjenigen zwischen den konstruktiven und den figurativen Elementen.

In April 1999, the Sparkasse Hattingen "Foundation for Art, Culture and Monument Preservation" launched an international competition for the artistic design of the historic Steinhagen Gate. The aim was to redefine Hattingen's five medieval city gates in urban space through modern art.

With the support of Hattinger Wohnstätten eG it was possible to realize the award-winning work by the artist Voré from Ettlingen in 2003. The housing company financed this work of art on the occasion of the company's 100th anniversary in 1999 as a gift to the citizens of the town of Hattingen.

The sculpture refers strictly to the given thematic and local situation in the opening of the historic city wall. In its materiality, color and dimensions, this is the basis on which a concise, symbolic and creatively differentiated design of the “city gate” idea is developed.

The urban structure as a connection between human community and built space is represented in a stone group in which figuratively grown and constructive architectural elements are built into one another in such a way that an inseparable unit is created.

The separation of inside and outside is implemented in the clear optical barrier, which is symbolized from afar by the steel construction of the "gate". A vertical sandstone slab within the "group of figures" is a sign for the gate that is opened or closed by the members of the community. The position of the door panel in an unstable position, separated from the wall, indicates its mobility and locking function.

The ambivalence of the situation between the protective character of the wall for the inside and a latently aggressive defense against the outside is signaled by the comfortably wide barrier elements that rest on the wall. The beam from the inner city side is raised and thus open. From the outside, the parts of the city wall remain strictly connected and occupied by a row of raised gate posts as a sign of well-fortified protection that can be seen from afar.

The entire work lives from the tension between the materials steel and stone and at the same time from that between the constructive and the figurative elements.
