Description

Statue of St. Augustine with a burning heart.
Provost Wilhelm Sternemann (1926-2005), who was very socially committed and equally interested in contemporary art, commissioned the sculptor Jürgen Goertz to create the larger-than-life sculpture in 1985. In his 'Confessions', Augustine wrote that his heart burned with love for God. This was illustrated by the sculptor.
In 1996, when mining in Gelsenkirchen was being phased out, Goertz created a work of art on the subject of 'Glück auf' on behalf of Provost Sternemann, see here.
