Düsseldorfer Broncegiesserei 1920s? |
Statue of a 'kiepenkerl' - hawker, a travelling merchant with his merchandise in a basket ('kiepe') on his back.
It was donated in 1963* to the town of Rees by the tobacco company Henrics. Oldenkott senior & Comp. on the occasion of its 125th anniversary. The Kiepenkerl was used a logo for their tobacca. The sculpture previously adorned the factory yard for a long time, maybe even from 1921 when the firm had built its new factory in Rees. Small replica's of the state are also known.
It looks if the unknown sculptor was inspired by the 1896 Kiepenkerl by August Schmiemann in Münster.
* In a newspaper article of 1972 is said that the Kiepenkerl was standing at the entrance of the factory in Rees.
