Massive monument surmounted by a lion in front of an armour and flags (and a shield and swords on the back side). The lion lies on a block with at the front the text "der ist ein mann, der sterben kann für gott und vaterland. em. arndt" (He is a man, who can die for God and Fatherland, by Em Arndt), and at the back "den gefallenen sohnen der stadt emmerich gewidmet im jahre 1913" (dedicated to the fallen sons of Emmerich in 1913). This block is flanked by two sitting eagles.
On the lower part is the text "den gefallenen helden die dankbare vaterstadt" (To the fallen heroes, the grateful hometown).
The monument was designed in 1913 by the artists Hugo Lederer, Theodor Haake and Wilhelm Kreis. It commemorates the fallen of the wars of German unification (1864-1871).
