Description

Relief of the statue of Mary and Child in a lime tree.

According to the chronicle, the Dietrich Mülfahrt from Aldenhoven found in 1654 an statue of the Mother of God in a lime tree. Every evening he and his friends held a devotion there. While doing so, they saw a wonderful glow, as if candles had been burning. Mülfahrt and his friends informed the pastor, who then had the statue of the Virgin Mary brought to the parish church. In 1659, Duke Philipp Wilhelm of Jülich had built the Chapel of Grace (Gnadenkapelle) with a Baroque high altar and crucifixion group built on the spot where they had seen the light. The statue of grace is still kept in the chapel today and Mary is venerated under the name 'Refuge of Sinners'.
