Köln / Statuen am Rathausturm   Köln / Statuen am Rathausturm

Description

The Tower of the Cologne Town Hall shows 133 statues. Except for the statues above the entrance there are statues of 124 persons related to the history of Cologne. Heavily damaged, almost destroyed, in the Second World War the tower was reconstructed in 1975, but without the statues. The new sculpture program was developed in 1981 for a period of five years by a commission of historians. The history of Cologne should be considered up to the present, however, no living person, no 'negative figures' should be displayed. In 1986, the basic concept has been decided:

The sculptures were made by 57 sculptors from Weiberner Tuff, a volcanic stone from the Eifel. Five old figures were restored and reused. In 1995, finally, all the figures were erected. For better durability, the figures had received a treatment with acrylic resin after so-called 'Ibach process'. However, this treatment led after a short time to great damage, so that the figures had to be removed. In the beginning of 2008 sculptors began with the execution of new figures, which were exact copies of the predecessors, but made from the French Savonnières limestone. Since November 2008 adorn again all 124 characters in Council Tower of Cologne.

We have not photographed all 133 statues (lack of time). The statues photographed have a 'lemonchiffon' background - and only for these statues catchwords and sculptors are included in the indexes. The statues are listed bottom to top, and starting in the staircase tower in the center of the south side and going to the left around the tower. The numbers are according to the the list on Wikipedia, which follows the order of the website of the Stadt Köln. This order is more-or-less chronolgical.
