Dreiländer Denkmal

Three-country monument

Michael Franke
1991

Gronau (Westf.) / Dreiländer Denkmal   Gronau (Westf.) / Dreiländer Denkmal

Description

Three irregular hexagonal steel columns with a coat of arms at the chamfered top. The coats of arms are of the diocese of Münster, the county of Bentheim and the Dutch province of Overijssel, respectively. A hand extends from the back of each pillar and the three hands grasp each other.
The monument symbolises the tri-border point located just north of Gronau: Netherlands - Lower Saxony (Bentheim) and North Rhine-Westphalia (Münster).
At the 'real' three-country point, there is a triangular stone column with the same three arms, dating from 1659.
