Description

Corner statue on a console of a beggar boy holding a hat. Above him is a leaping lion.
The Führer durch die Residenzstadt Braunschweig (Verkehrsverein Braunschweig c. 1906, p. 65-66) tells thje following story (legend?): Stechinelli was a beggar boy who had earned the favour of Duke Georg Wilhelm Wilhelm of Celle through his honesty. He saved the duke's life by discovering an assassination attempt Duke by discovering an assassination attempt against him, whereupon the Duke the Duke took care of him and in 1678 appointed him postmaster general in 1678 and later made a baron.
Wikipedia tells a completely different story: Francesco Maria Capellini was born in Rimini in 1640, the scion of a noble family. .. In 1655, he met Georg Wilhelm, Duke of Calenberg-Hannover (1624-1705), at his cousin's house in Rome, who took him to Hanover in 1656 to educate him and employ him as a valet de chambre. He won the Duke's favour, who gave him the Ballhof as a gift in 1664.
