The Brunswick Lion (German: Braunschweiger Löwe) is a medieval sculpture, created in bronze between 1164 and 1176. The Lion was originally located on the Burgplatz square in front of the Brunswick Cathedral. The monument was moved to Dankwarderode Castle in 1980, and later replaced at the original location by a replica. Within Brunswick, it is commonly known as the 'Castle Lion"'(Burglöwe).

In the year of salvation 1616 in August, the most illustrious Prince and Lord, Lord Friedrich Ulrich, Heinrich Julius' son, Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg, ordered this old monument of his dynasty, which had fallen into disrepair through the ages and the weather, to be restored to its former splendour, after he had besieged and encircled this city most violently a year before from 22 July to 11 November, but peace and harmony had been concluded after its liberation in February with the oath of homage, for everlasting remembrance. Restored in August 1858 |
