Aluminium statue of Therese Unnerstal as a six-year old girl. The original plaster statue was made in 1998 after a photo of 1930. The aluminium cast is from 2012.
Am Standort des katholischen Gemeindehauses gegenüber befand sich bis 1967 die Alte Mädchenschule. Im Eingang des Hauses befindet sich noch das letzte Fragment, ein Wappenstein.
Das Mädchen Therese Unnerstall wurde 1924 in Melle geboren und besuchte hier die Kohlbrinkschule. Sie machte dann eine Ausbildung als Kontoristin bei der Firma Starcke. Im 2. Weltkrieg erlitt Therese ein schweres Verschüttungstrauma während eines Luftangriffs in Bremen, wo sie zum Arbeitsdienst verpflichtet war. Sie wurde dadurch so schwer nervenkrank, dass sie bis zu ihrem Tod in einer Nerven-klinik blieb.
Das Bild des Mädchens wurde hier gestellt, um an das Trauma ihrer Generation zu erinnern und steht beispielhaft für ungezählte Schicksale. Das trotzige Kind erhebt Anspruch auf ein selbstbestimmtes Lieben und ist meine Hommage an den kindlichen Eigensinn.
Es führt uns die Verantwortung für den Schutz und die persöhnliche Entwicklung unserer Kinder vor Augen.
Das Mädchendenkmal ist die Initiative des Künstlers Peter Möller.
Meinungen und Kommentare dazu sind ausdrücklich erwünscht und zu richten an die Stadt Melle.

Monument to a girl

The Old Girls' School was located opposite the Catholic parish hall until 1967. The last fragment, a coat of arms stone, can still be found in the entrance to the building.
The girl Therese Unnerstall was born in Melle in 1924 and attended the Kohlbrinkschule here. She then trained as an office clerk at the Starcke company. During the Second World War, Therese suffered severe trauma during an air raid in Bremen, where she was obliged to do labour service. She became so seriously ill that she remained in a mental hospital until her death.
The statue of the girl was placed here to remind us of the trauma of her generation and is exemplary for countless fates. The defiant child lays claim to a self-determined love and is my homage to childlike stubbornness.
It reminds us of our responsibility for the protection and personal development of our children.
The girls' memorial is the initiative of the artist Peter Möller.
