Statues - Hither & Thither

 

Description

During the great air raid on Hildesheim on 22 March 1945, St. Paul's Church was destroyed: only the enclosing walls and the eight pillars of the nave have been preserved. In the 1970s, the construction of a new retirement home was combined with the reconstruction of the external shape of the church. From the spring of 1979, St. Paulus was rebuilt as a modern old people's and nursing home by the Order of the Sisters of Mercy according to plans by the architect Franz Sommer. In 1981, it was inaugurated as a nursing home.
In 1985, six sculptors made ten statues of saints to be placed on the buttresses and above the entrance. Unfortunately we have not (yet) been able to find which saints are represented and which sculptor made which statue.
