Das Schauteufelskreuz

The Show Devil Cross

Medieval artist
1428 (replica 1999)

Hildesheim / Das Schauteufelskreuz   Hildesheim / Das Schauteufelskreuz

Description

Stone with a relief of a kneeling man with a beard, with raised hands, with a coat of arms crowned with a helmet.
The relief illustrates an old legend. A poor shoemaker made a covenant with the devil for a quantity of silver, on the condition that if he used the silver for a purpose pleasing to God, the devil would let him have his soul. The schoemaker had the silver made into a cross and after a year showed it to the devil with the words: "Look at this cross, devil!" By melting the cross again he became a rich man. In gratitude for his salvation from the devil, he had made a memorial cross made. This cross is lost, but the base stone was preserved until 1945 and a replica of it is now on the Alter Markt.
