Der Ulenköper

Eines Sonntags morgens ging ein Bauer durch die Stadt
Uelzen und trug einen Sack, da krabbelte etwas darin. Ein
Kaufmann fragte ihn, was darin wäre. „Barftgansʺ, antwortete
der Bauer. Der Kaufmann verstand „Barkhahnsʺ und zahlte ihm
viel Geld auf die Hand für den Braten. Aber zu Haus flogen drei
junge Eulen aus dem Sack. Der Kaufmann wurde ärgerlich und
er klagte im Rathaus gegen den Bauern. Der aber sagte, er
hätte Barftgans und nicht Barkhahns verkauft und Eulen
gingen Tag und Nacht barfuß, ohne Schuh und Strümpfe. Der
Richter lachte und gab ihm recht. Seit dieser Zeit heißen die
Uelzener die Ulenköper.

Das Ulenköperdenkmal
von Karlheinz Goedtke ist ein Geschenk der Uelzener Bürger an ihre Stadt. Es wurde auf Anregung des
Ratsherrn Peter Cordes vom Verkehrsverein Uelzen am 6. Mai 1967 errichtet.

The Owl Buyer

One Sunday morning a farmer went through the town of
Uelzen carrying a sack with something crawling in it. A
merchant asked him what was in the sack. "Barftgans"* answered
the farmer. The merchant understood "Barkhahns"** and paid him
much money in the hand for the roast. But at house three
young owls flow out of the sack. The merchant was angry and
complained at the town hall against the farmer. However, he said he
has sold Barftgans and no Barkhahns and owls
walked day and night barefoot, without shoes and stockings. The
judge laughed and agreed. Since that time, the citizens of
Uelzen are called Owl Buyers.

The Owl Buyer Monument
by Karlheinz Goedtke is a gift of citizens of Uelzen to their city. It was erected
at the suggestion of Councillor Peter Cordes by the Tourist Office of Uelzen on 6 May 1967th

*Barftgans is low-german for Barfußgeher = barefoot walker
**Barkhahn is low-german for Birkhahn = black grouse.
