Statues - Hither & Thither

 

Description

Fountain with images and stories from Cuxhaven. The coastal location of the city is not only visible in individual episodes, but also in the basic architectural concept. The fountain has a 'land' and a 'sea' side. Two bronze image plates, each 400 kg heavy, form the 'core elements' of the fountain. The panels tell in a series of reliefs the history of the town of Cuxhaven, and especially about the proximity to the sea.
Depending of high or low tide in the Elbe water from five nozzles streams to the land or to the sea side of the fountain. The changes of the tides is controlled with a program.

The panel on the sea side shows:

• Neptune and a mermaid.
• A sailor playing the accordion, 'An der Nordseeküste…'
• The name 'Alte Liebe' in many languages, a shrimp fisherman.
• The fishseller Mine Möhlmann (an old woman with a pram); Jan Cux and Cuxi (the town's mascottes) looking out of windows, the Blue Monkey ('Der blaue Affe', a drinking monkey) and a bathing woman trying the water temperature with her foot.
• A pile of books, with on the spines: Heinrich Heine, Ringelnatz, Brockes, Die Chauken, Das Wattenmeer, Die Ritter von Lappe, Schloé Ritzebüttel and Störtebeker.
• A map of the river Elbe with tributaries.
• Fish and shell.

And on the land side, illustrations of the history of Cuxhaven, the dates of floods with the water height and several explaining texts:

• The coat of arms of Cuxhaven, a spade, Dölles Hotel, the Jungfernburg and the Germania statue (all demolished).
• A bust of Gustav W. Kaemmerer (1857-1942): 'Dr Kaemmerer Amtsverwalter 1892 bis 1909', and Ritzebüttel castle.
• A map of the Amt Ritzebüttel in 1594.
• A graph with the number of inhabitants and tourists.
• A graph with the wind energy and the trade on the fish market.
