Annotation

The statue was inaugurated on 14 September 1904. The idea was born already in 1897 by the "Verschönerungs-Verein zu Wolfenbüttel". The design was interpreted in March 1902 by the Neuesten Nachrichten as follows: After the 30-Years-War the Duke rides on his horse to his country, with the terrible destruction for his eyes worried about the welfare of his country. He comes to a source and lets his horse drink. This fresh source became for the duke a symbol for the reconstruction of the country.
