Henry the Lion (1129/30 - 1195), Duke of Bavaria and Saxony, had the lion statue built during his reign around 1166 as a symbol of his ducal authority and jurisdiction

Replica of the 12th century Brunswick Lion. The original replica was placed in 1914 and was gift by Ernst August von Braunschweig-Lüneburg to Duke Johann Albrecht von Mecklenburg. This statue disappeared in 1950. For the 2014 replica the same mold was used as for the copy in Schwerin
