Memorial for the Revolutionary Sailors

Reinhard Dietrich & Wolfgang Eckard

Rostock / Gedenkstätte revolutionärer Matrosen   Rostock / Gedenkstätte revolutionärer Matrosen

The monumental memorial remembers the revolutionary sailors at the end of World War I. It consists of a base with a 20-meter relief wall (designed by Reinhard Dietrich) and a 9-meter-high bronze sculpture. The memorial complex without sculpture was opened in 1970 and had an exhibition space but closed since 1985.

The memorial was in restoration when we visited Rostock, and especially the relief wall could not be sufficiently photographed.

Last written words by Karl Liebknecht, published in the Rote Fahne of 15 January 1919:

und ob wir dann noch leben werden wenn es
erreicht wird leben wird unser programm
es wird die welt der erlösten menschheit
beherschen troz alledem.
