Description
3.6-meter-high bronze sculpture of a boat with seven people, a skeleton and a dog in it. The sculpture is based on Albrecht Dürer's woodcut illustrating the 1497 edition of Das Narrenschiff (first edition 1494 - Wikipedia). by Sebastian Brant (1457-1521). It depicts a boat - a nutshell with two fools masks at front and rear - as a metaphor for the threatened world. The figures represent:
- on the left side the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise, brought in despair by the laughing death, with Cain, still as a child, but with a knife in his hand. Behind them the tree of wisdom, already withered, serving as mast.
- on the right side three figures: (1) a choleric muscular man with a club, standing for violence, (2) a handyman with a spanner, representing a realist from the present time, and (3) and a limp mocker for resignation, who empties the cup.
The two texts bands make an appeal against environmental destruction, war and violence.
