Description

Sixteen statues in the façade of the Friedrichsbau, built between 1601 and 1607 by Friedrich V. von der Pfalz. The statues represent the most important ancestors of Friedrich V:

In each of the gables are two reliefs with coats of arms of Friedrich IV and his wife, Louise Juliana of Orange-Nassau, daughter of William of Orange (both gables have identical coats of arms), resp. that of:

  1. Friedrich IV. Von der Pfalz (quartered: lion of Hohenstaufen and lozanges of Wittelsbach, with in the center the orb, representing the position of the count palatinates as Arch-Steward of the Holy Roman Empire).
  2. William of Orange (Dillenburg 1533 - Delft 1584), (quartered: I Nassau, II Katzenelnbogen, III Vianden, IV Dietz; center shield: quartered I and IV Châlon, II and III Orange with center shield Genève).
