Roland

Roland, a Frankish military leader under Charlemagne, became a symbol of the independence of the growing cities from the local nobility. He is depicted as a knight with a drawn sword.

Description

5.35 m tall stone statue of Roland in his armor, the sword straight up in his right hand, in the left dagger, in a depression on the head grows a the tuft of Houseleek (Sempervivum). According to legend, the plant protects Roland against lightning.

A replica stands at the Märkisches Museum in Berlin.

Annotation

This is one of the oldest preserved Roland statues.
