Three saints statues on the courtyard of the church of Our Lady of the Snow church
Jan Oldřich Mayer
Three stone statues on the courtyard of the Franciscan Church of Our Lady of the Snow:
- Sv. Jan Nepomucký - St. John of Nepomuk
(Nepomuk c. 1345 - Praha 1393), confessor of the queen of Bohemia, refused to divulge the secrets of the confessional. At the behest of King Wenceslaus of Bohemia he was thrown from the Charles Bridge in Prague and drowned. John of Nepomuk is patron saint of bridges (Wikipedia)
- Sv. Antonín z Padovy - St. Anthony of Padua - with at the foot the text letarane 1577
born Fernando Martins de Bulhões, (Lisbon c. 1195 - Padua 1231), priest and friar of the Franciscan Order, known for his preaching and expert knowledge of scripture
- Sv. Petr z Alkantary - St. Peter of Alcántara
(Spanish: San Pedro de Alcántara) (1499 - 1562), Spanish Franciscan
NB the Portal Praha website mentions two saints only, St. John of Nepomuk and St. Peter of Alcántara, as the work of Mayer, 1715. The statue of St. Anthony of Padua is probably added recently.
- Jan Oldřich Mayer (Grafenflug, Austria, prob. 1666 - Praha 1721),
Prague Baroque wood-carver and sculptor of Austrian origin
