Description

Two stone statues above the entrnace of the Central Library:
  1. (left) GESSNER - Conrad Gesner (Zürich 1516 - Zürich 1565), Swiss naturalist and bibliographer (Wikipedia).
  2. (right) BODMER - Johann Jakob Bodmer (Greifensee bei Zürich 1698 - Gut Schönenberg bei Zürich 1783), Swiss author, academic, critic and poet. In addition to his formative influence on the literary life in Zürich Bodmer was also an important figure in the history of the city library. In 1722 he joined the Urban Library Society, and from 1758 he served as its Vice President. On Bodmer's suggestion, the company changed the name of their institution in the city library (Stadtbibliothek). In addition, Bodmer bequeathed to this library a generous amount of money as well as a substantial part of his private collection of books (Wikipedia).
