The Battle of Stoss was a military conflict between Appenzell and Habsburg during the Appenzell Wars. It took place on 17 June 1405 at Stoss, between Altstätten and Gais in today's Canton Appenzell Ausserrhoden. In connection with this battle is the report on the mythical Appenzell hero Ueli Rotach. He was attacked in a house by an Austrian crowd, had fought bravely and killed some enemies. Finally, the house was set on fire, and he "undefeated" perished in the flames.
