Yemanja is the deity of fresh and salt water in ancient African religions and in the Afro-Brazilian religions of Candomblé and Umbanda. In Africa, the name was derived from the phrase Yèyé omo ejá (Mother whose children are fish); it was the orisha of the Egbá, a Yoruba nation established in the region of current-day Nigeria, as a religion associated with a river. The deity was represented by a pregnant woman, with large breasts, who was considered the mother of Rivers and the sea and of numerous other orishas. This religion, brought with the Yoruba or Nagos slaves in the 18th century, was above all associated with seawater, and the orisha's image resembles a mermaid, preserving her designations as Mother of Waters.
