Bandundu Water Jazz Band artist: Tom Frantzen The Africa Museum and the beautiful park with its ponds inspired me. It's like a jazz band of Africanaquatic animals came out of the museum to welcome the visitors. They are located on floating circles suggesting music records suggest and overlapping like the leaves of water lilies. Jazz symbolizes the influence of African culture on the Western. I call the orchestra Bandundu Water Jazz Band because of the musicality of the word and to a region in central Africa with rivers and a large lake. I have tried to use something of the poetic, naïv aspect that often is found in African sculptures, in my orchestra. The animals were made on a human scale and are all different. They are complementing each other in a harmonious, playful and humane manner. The roundabout inspired me to create a circle game from a structural and abstract approach where car drivers also participate. I want to break the classical symmetry of the traditional fountains by jets departing from a core in different directions and heights. This creates a chaotic rhythm. Each spring the water festival can start again. inaugurated on 23 March 2005 by |
