Maria Park is a processional park on the site of the cloister forest of the local Capuchin monastery. Following a survived sea voyage on a mission trip to Punjab decided provincial superior Father Jan Baptist Rutten to establish a Maria grotto, which was built in 1895 in the convent park of Meersel. A lane ('dreef') was built leading to this grotto. Many pilgrims came to this place and it was constantly expanded with numerous chapels, stations of the cross, groups of statues and the like. Especially at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the park was continuously enlarged and embellished. Images were also added during the interwar period and after the Second World War.
Only the individual, free-standing images are included on this website.
