Description

Bronze statue of Emperor Francis I in classical Roman attire.
On the corners of the base are four statues depicting the imperial virtues:

  1. Religion - with a star on her forehead, pressing the cross to her chest (star and cross missing).
  2. Peace - a sitting woman with her right hand leaning on a laurel-wreathed sword and in her left a palm branch.
  3. Justice - with sword and scales.
  4. Strength - with her right hand resting on a club, and a shield with lion in her left hand
The pedestal is octagonal and shows eight reliefs, depicting:

  1. Science - woman with a scroll with the text ευρεκα (I found it) and in the background a globe and text a diis immortalibvs / omnivm rervm / capienda primordia (From the immortal gods derives the origin of all things).
  2. Trade - sailor with goods and a ship's mast in the background, text bello extincto / viis patefactis / tergeste et venetiis / portvs immvnitate / donatis / commercivm / terra mariqve / avctvm (After the end of the war and the development of roads was, once Trieste and Venice were granted duty exemption, land and water trade increased) (quote of the poet Felice Bellotti (1786 - 1858)).
  3. Industrial production - woman with a spinning machine, invented by Clarke and Bughy.
  4. Mining - man with a Davy safety lamp.
  5. Agriculture - woman with fruit and corn.
  6. Livestock - man with cattle and sheep.
  7. Art - female figure.
  8. Arts of war - armed man.
