Description

On one of the courtyards of the Burg is a series of 10 marble and 2 bronze busts of famous Styrians. In the 'Styrian Commemorative Year' 1959, the 100th anniversary of the death of Archduke Johann, on the initiative of the cultural politician Hanns Koren was decided to set up a 'Styrian gallery of honor' in the 'small courtyard'. The project was designed with the objective 'to present pictorially important personalities, born in Styria, who became famous outside the country through their work'. Originally there were ten busts of important men (no women).
To reach the young target group, it was decided to give the commission be to 'seven young Styrian sculptors': Othmar Clemencic, Erwin Huber, Ulf Mayer, Josef Papst, Gottfried Prabitz, Alfred Schlosser and Erich Unterweger. They are former students of Alexander Silveri, who got the artistic supervision of the project to ensure to the unity of the ensemble.

In 1994 two bronze busts of famous Styrian women, sculpted by female sculptors, were added.
