Description

Steel monument, showing an abstracted eagle who has freed himself from a narrow, high cage (with the date 26.10.1955), spreading its wings and prepares for departure from the former Burgbastei to the future, characterized by new freedom.
The statue commemorates the independence of Austria in 1955.

Errichtet vom Land Steiermark gemäß
Beschluss der Landesregierung vom
14. September 1955 zur Erinnerung an
den Abzug der letzten Besatzungstruppen.
Der aus dem Käfig entfliehende Adler
symbolisiert die vollständige Wiedererlangung
der Freiheit der Republik Österreich.
Das Werk des Grazer Bildhauers
Wolfgang Skala wurde 1960 hier aufgestellt.

Liberty Monument

Eracted by the State of Styria after
a decision of the Provincial Government of
14 September 1955 to commemorate
the withdrawal of the last occupation troops.
The eagle escaping from from the cage
symbolizes the full recovery of
the freedom of the Republic of Austria.
The work of the Graz sculptor
Wolfgang Skala was here erected in 1960
