Statue (Lichtschwert)

Statue (Kafka's Sword)
Created in 1992, 500 years after the discovery of
America by Christopher Columbus, this statue
was commissioned by the "steirischer herbst"
arts festival, and inspired by the main theme of
the commemorative year, "America Nowhere".
The sculpture is a reconstruction, on a scale
of 1:1, of the American Statue of Liberty which
has been stripped of its outer copper shell so
that only the supporting steel structure remains.
The original steel skeleton was designed by
Gustave Eiffel in 1883. In the reconstruction, the
torch is replaced by a sword, as suggested in
Franz Kafka's early text, The Stoker: "Her arm
and the sword were raised like in recent days,
and the free winds blew about her form." With
the sphere counter-balanced in the other hand
the statue adopts a more open posture.
