Description

Large bronze statue (3.1 m high) of Archduke Johann in courtly civilian clothes with a document in his right hand. It stands on a square pedestal with texts, written by Anastasius Grün (Anton Alexander Graf Auersperg), and coats-of-arms on the faces.

On the corners of the pedestal are allegorical statues on the corners, representing the cornerstones of the Archduke's achievements and promotions.

  2. Wissenschaft / Science, the antique female figure with a parchment role and a globe.
  3. Bergbau / Mining, an old miner.
  4. Landwirtschaft / Agriculture, a young woman with a corn wreath.

The statue stands in a fountain basin with on the four corners allegorical representations of the rivers in Styria, with on the pedestals relief heads representing economic activities:

  1. MUR, figure based on the coat of arms of the city of Graz; the relief heads featuring Ackerbau / Agriculture and Bergbau / mining.
  2. ENNS with a fish box; the relief heads featuring Industrie / Industry and Waidwerk.
  3. DRAU, with a basket full of grapes and a rudder. The relief heads represent Weinbau / Viniculture and Forstwirtschaft / Forestry.
  4. SANN, with ancient bath instruments. The relief heads represent das Heilbäderwesen / the Spas and likely die urigen Wälder / the quaint forests.
