Annotation

Macuro has the historical distinction of being the only part of the American continent visited by Christopher Columbus. Columbus and his men spent a few days interacting with the natives. This took place in August 1498 during Columbus' third expedition to the Americas. Despite exploring this area of the continent for some time, Columbus thought that they were looking at a large island and named the area Isle of Grace.

Estatua ubicada anteriormente en el Cerro de El Calvario. Caracas.

Comment by SHoweMBOU on Panoramio:

Statue of Admiral Cristobal Colon dated 1974. He was the great 'Christopher Columbus' that explored the Gulf of Paria in 1498, during his 3rd Voyage of Discovery. What then was the significance of erecting this statue in 1974?
I believe the crude wooden cross (to the left) was erected in 1998 to commemorate CC landing here 500yrs ago, on 5th August 1498. It was the only place the Admiral set foot on the South American continent
