Description

Bronze statue Columbus standing on a pedestal in a landscaped area overlooking the Hudson River. He wears period clothing, including a hat, vest and tunic. He points with his proper right hand - to the south (downstream the Hudson River) - and carries a compass in his proper left hand. There is a rope and anchor at his feet.

     In celebration of a 500th Anniversary commemorating the vision, courage, determination and voyages of

CHRISTOPHER
COLUMBUS

and the crews of the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, whose gallantry resulted in the joining of two worlds then unknown to each other. We, the members of UNICO of Newburgh, and generous friends inscribed hereon, dedicate this monument to the SPIRIT OF EXPLORATION exhibited by the gallant Americans here from every nation.

Annotation

Dedicated 11 October 1992. The sculpture was commissioned through Pompeian Studios of Bronxville, NY and created at their foundry in Villa Ilice, Carrara, Italy
