Description

Monument with three bronze statues: Columbus sitting in the middle, between figures representing Europe and America. This monument for the fifth centenary of the discovery of America was in 1992 placed in the Intrepid Sea*Air*Space Museum in New York - Manhattan. In 1998 it was replaced to Garfield.

There are three bronze plaques near the monument which describe the history.

THE NEW WORLD
This monument,
donated by the Italian government for
the 500th Anniversary of the Discovery of America.
October 12, 1492 - 1992
was created in Venice, Italy,
by Italian sculptor Gianni Arrico.

The piece symbolizes the voyage of Columbus.
The figure of Columbus sits in the middle. To his back is the Old World,
represented by a Renaissance woman standing at the threshold of
new beginnings, facing him is the New World, represented by
a young woman, awakening from a gentle sleep.

Surrounding these figures is a beautiful murano crystal.
The statues are made of bronze.
The base is white marble from Istria, Italy.

The Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum acknowledges the
generosity of the Italian Government and the Italian people,
who have made this beautiful cultural contribution
to the Intrepid Museum Complex possible.

The residents of the City of Garfield and the County of Bergen
gratefully acknoledge the individuals, businesses and
organizations whose generosity established this new permanent
home for the Christopher Columbus "The New World" monument
in Dahnert's Lake Bergen County Park. We thank you for your
vision and for the investment which you have made in The City
of Garfield, "The City of Champions."
